SAESP 50 years

In 2019, SAESP (São Paulo State Society of Anesthesiology) completed 50 years of activities. For half a century, SAESP has successfully accomplished its mission of promoting excellence in the practice of anesthesia and patient safety, providing continuing education, research, professional development, and improvement of working conditions.

There have been many achievements since its founding in 1969, starting with refresher courses from 1977. SAESP’s headquarters has an auditorium (2014) and a simulation center (2017) that are equipped with all the necessary resources to carry out theoretical and practical activities, focusing on training and improving the participants’ technical skills, with expository classes, simulations, and case discussion. It currently has a wide portfolio of in-classroom and distance learning activities, which provide the associate with continuing education in the most varied areas of anesthesia, including in administration, where the professional’s entrepreneurial aspect is stimulated and developed. These initiatives have allowed SAESP to partner with several societies from all over Brazil, as well as with international associations, including ASA (American Society of Anesthesiology), AQI (Anesthesia Quality Institute), APSF (Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation), ERAS Latam, ERAS Society, ESA (European Society), ISPCOP (International Society for the Perioperative Care of the Obese Patient), SCA (Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists), SPA (Portuguese Society of Anesthesiology), and The New York State Society of Anesthesiologists. This made SAESP one of the most active societies in the country. Thus, in 2016, SAESP inaugurated an International Relations Department.

Another major achievement was COPA — São Paulo’s Congress of Anesthesiology, which has been taking place since 2004. In 2018, in its 15th edition, it established itself as one of the five most important Anesthesiology events in the world, representing 19 countries. Since its first edition, the participating public has increased more than 400%.

Maintaining this traditional and incessant work towards improvement, in 2016, it became a pioneer among anesthesia societies in Brazil, creating a Scientific Research Department that aims to foster research in the perioperative area, facilitating the inclusion of multiple centers. The first project, initiated in 2018, is a multicenter observational study that analyzes cases of intraoperative cardiac arrest in Brazil.

SAESP establishes itself as a society that works to be ahead in anesthesiology with a dynamic and innovative view. It aims to constantly develop within its expertise and interface with other players and audiences that act together as civil societies, medical societies, and international entities.
